The B Virdot story is touching to me because during The Great Depression my Grandfather was injured in an accident and became disabled. He went from being a provider for his family to “another mouth to feed”. In 1933 he shot himself. I think ‘what if’ there had been a B Virdot in San Antonio, Texas? Maybe my mother and her eight siblings would have grown up with a father. By gifting our $100 we might be doing more than helping someone ‘get by’ we might be giving them hope as well…
This year I had three potential recipients for the money in mind. I carried the money for one week without crossing paths with anyone. On Monday, December 1, I was determined to seek them out. It so happened I ran into my recipient first thing.
This family of four I have been noticing since school had started in August. They drive a truck with no rear window and we have had some cold mornings. They are always poorly dressed in the same clothes every day. I am sure they are unemployed. Volunteering in the school I was told by their son that his father was finally getting out of the hospital after seven weeks.
I approached the father telling him of our company and the Angels on the Streets program. I gave him the envelope, he did not open it but said “Thank you. God Bless You.” I left -saying a silent prayer that the money would be put to good use.
Now-a-days I receive warm waves from the family and I know they are so grateful. I feel very happy to have helped them and perhaps given them some hope.
