I know this woman whose selflessness shines through daily. She moved back to Albuquerque a couple years ago hoping to help her troubled teenage son. This was a familiar ground for her and she had friends and family here who were willing to lend a hand. Albuquerque turned out to be a good move for her son because he found a girlfriend who had two young boys. As time went by her son told her she was going to be a grandma. It was an exciting time mixed with fear because her son, who is now in his early 20’s, could hardly take care of himself and was still living with her. The young parents ended up homeless with three children under the age of five, so my friend opened her home to them. Before we knew it another child arrived. This means there were four children and three adults living in a small apartment trying to make ends meet. The Grandmother is the only one with a car and she runs her son and his family all over town for appointments, jobs, and school while maintaining a full-time job. This grandmother has no time for herself and everything she does revolves around providing and loving those grandbabies. When I see her and the children I can’t help but wonder how she does it. My conclusion is when it is family you will do anything to help.
When I gave her the envelope she immediately started to cry because she was strapped for money so close to Christmas. She stated she was going to use it for Christmas gifts for the kids. It felt great being able to help someone who has given so much to help her family. Angels on the Street made a big difference.
