On Sunday afternoon I was doing my usual routine getting ready for the work week, filling up my gas tank. The pumps weren’t taking cards so you had to go inside, usually at this point I leave and go to another gas station but I saw there were only 2 people in line and decided to go in. The lady in front of me had her 2 small children. She approached the counter and attempted to pay with her card, but it kept declining. She apologized to me for the hold up and with tears in her eyes walked out to her car. She was in the car right next to me and I could see she was crying in the front seat. I asked if she was okay she said no not really and then began to tell me that she was trying to get to Durango, Colorado where her elderly parents live. She was leaving an abusive situation but her husband had already cancelled the cards and withdrawn the money from their account. Now she had no money for gas or any way to feed her girls. She said she didn’t really think it out and just packed as much as she could, loaded up her girls and left. I could see and hear the devastation she was going through. I went back to my car and got my envelope. I knew she was the one. The one who had been placed in my path to help. I handed it to her and when she opened it she cried out loud, gave me a hug and kept profusely thanking me. I held her tightly and let her cry, she needed to let it all out. I let her know how I was able to help her through Angels on the Streets. We talked and she vented to me. We finally parted ways but not without another hug and smile.
