It was a cold Saturday evening when i walked up the flight of stairs to a small 1 bedroom apartment. I had been given information that there was a single mom with four children that had recently come from Zaire that could use help.
My knock at the door was greeted with a teenage girl smiling from ear to ear, saying “Welcome!” The rest of the family was in the unlit apartment sitting on the only piece of furniture, a small couch. They were huddled around the small glow of a phone light reading a book.
I asked for mom and the young lady said, “Welcome!” A young teenage or preteen boy came forward with the rest of the family following, and said “Hi!” I asked him if he spoke English and after he said yes I asked him to translate. I explained the story and gave mom the card, which caused the smiles to grow from all of them.
