Being a first time Angel, my wife and I had no idea where to start or how to find a person or family in need. We were in the car driving around town and ended up downtown. We had approached APD in search of guidance on perhaps where to go on the idea that they typically are aware of people in need of congregate. APD had directed us to a shelter in town for a good starting point. After visiting, we had noticed that while it was a great way to give back to the underprivileged community it didn’t feel ‘personal’. We stopped at a few grocery stores looking for a family purchasing their Thanksgiving dinner. It took a while and a couple stores. Finally after a few hours this couple appeared at the check-out line. It was quite interesting because there was a whole carriage full of groceries – the bagging area was full, the belt was full and there were still groceries in the carriage. (Two turkeys, at least 3 packages of dinner roles, huge bag of potatoes, celery, carrots, all the fixins’)
I slipped the Angels on the Streets envelope to the cashier while the couple was preoccupied unloading their groceries. I told the cashier there was a gift inside for the couple whom she was scanning their items. I stepped to the side away from the line.
After all the items were scanned, the couple handed the cashier some coupons, those were deducted and the cashier hands the Angels on the Streets envelope to the lady and she opens it and pulls out $100 and is immediately taken back by the gift and asked the cashier who would do such a thing? The cashier pointed our way – she came over in tears and thanked us over and over and said this would help her feed her boys. She was crying, my wife was crying, the cashier was crying, the husband and myself held it together. 🙂
This was the right destination…
